The heroine of Edith Wharton's novel of early 20th-century high society, Lily Bart, takes residence there after a heartrending journey. A sumptuous rendering in the same mold as Martin Scorsese's earlier Wharton adaptation, The Age of Innocence, but far more successful in its execution, The House of Mirth is a sometimes staggering tale of duplicity and loss set against the chillingly repressive atmosphere imposed by Lily's gender and station. While not quite able to elaborate Lily's naïveté, Anderson is nonetheless glimmering as the orphaned society woman in search of a suitable husband (read: rich), all the while in love with a lawyer (Stoltz) of modest means. As the independent-minded but financially insecure Lily maneuvers through a maze of deception and pretense, she sets a course navigated by her own moral verisimilitude, betrayed by her own honorable ideas. Marred only by abrupt character introduction, The House of Mirth is a superior period piece filled with gorgeous detail and exquisite performances.
