Francis Ford Coppola adapted F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic for the screen with Redford as the titular character, a self-made man accepted into Long Island society back in the jazz age. The film captures neither the sensuality nor excitement of the novel, though it's a faithful adaptation. Redford and Farrow as Daisy are well-matched if curiously subdued.
