Review

McCarey won a well-deserved Best Director Oscar for this hilarious screwball classic. At the peak of their comic abilities, Grant and Dunne play a divorcing couple waiting out their 90-day interlocutory period (and fighting a custody battle for their pet terrier). When they begin dating other people, each goes to great lengths to disrupt the other's newfound romance; each scheme being more outrageous than the one before it. The Awful Truth is screwball comedy at its best and, in addition to Grant's Bringing Up Baby, is the epitome of the genre.
