"I'm trying to savor the Capra-esque quality," Bening's enthusiastic lobbyist says as she enters the White House. "Capra-esque" also ably describes Reiner's sweet-natured romantic comedy set against the drama of Washington, D.C.'s behind-the-scenes deals and presidential procedure. Douglas plays a Democratic president up for reelection. An idealistic widower, he meets Bening when she lashes out against his policies -- and in true Capra fashion, love is on the horizon. Reiner balances the film with equal parts joyful romantic comedy and bristling political observations. Douglas is at his most likable, and Bening is simply irresistible.
