Synopsis

Redford plays a CIA operative about to retire who has 24 hours to save the life of his protege (Pitt), who has been captured in China and is about to be executed.

Review

Throughout his career, director Scott has only been as good as his material; like his brother Ridley, he's rarely able to overcome the deficits of a bad script. Fortunately, with the exciting espionage thriller Spy Game, that's of little consequence as writers Beckner and Arata have fashioned a tight, compelling screenplay that is smartly performed and often shrewdly observed. Back in form in a role reminiscent of his Three Days of the Condor, Redford plays Nathan Muir, a CIA operative whose retirement is put on hold when he learns his protégé Tom Bishop (Pitt) has been captured in China and sentenced to death. With few resources and from across the globe, Muir has 24 hours to set in motion a plan to save Bishop and fend off the agency who wants nothing to do with the captured spy. The complex tale also flashbacks to when the two men first met, and Bishop's eventual tutoring under Muir. The story flows easily from past to present and back again, enabling the viewer to savor all the intrigue from the back alleys of foreign lands to the round tables of Washington, D.C.
