First-time director Linklater takes us on a kaleidoscopic journey through the neo-beatnik scene of Austin, Texas. Using an interesting cinematic device, Linklater introduces the viewer to a series of random characters, following each one until some other interesting person pops up. The film literally weaves its way from one to the next without ever looking back. Starting with Linklater himself, we meet a seamless string of vagabonds, pseudo-intellectuals, conspiracy theorists and even a woman hawking what she claims is a Madonna Pap smear. Filled with hilarious moments, the film is a fascinating document of a generation of would-be philosophers with nowhere to go and nothing to do.
