Synopsis

The British police called it "ram–raiding". Teenage hooligans called it "shopping". And audiences and critics worldwide called it one of the most shocking debuts of the decade: In a bleak near–future, charming ex–con Billy (Oscar nominee Jude Law in his first movie role) and sexy girlfriend Jo (Sadie Frost of 167064) live for stealing fast cars, leading cops on high–speed chases, and crashing through posh store windows to steal everything they can grab. Review

Written and directed by music video auteur Anderson, this hip, slick and colorful debut film takes an unsentimental look at the life of Billy (Law), a young adrenaline junkie recently released from prison. Abandoned by both parents and society, he spends his time stealing cars and robbing shops with his friends, including Jo (Frost), an adoring young Irish girl who sees Billy's self–destructive nature but can do nothing to change it. At odds with the police (in the person of Pryce) and a jealous chieftan (Pertwee in a terrific and intense performance), Billy careens along his collision course with arrest and/or death with reckless abandon. Anderson brings a remarkable visual artistry to the film, imbuing it with equal parts MTV fast–cuts and Terry Gilliam–esque urban British waste–scape.
