Review

The dynamic Oz television series from HBO begins its second season with the prison riot that ended the first season. The riot devastated the experimental section, nicknamed "The Emerald City" - the Governor sent in SWAT teams who left 6 prisoners and 2 guards dead. The investigation begins as each of the leaders and guards are questioned. There is a mysterious murder amongst the deaths and this is the focus of the first show. In this first episode there is plenty of naked butt, a drying-out drug addict with compulsive masturbation issues and an oral seduction that turns real ugly - in other words, not much has changed after the riot. It's a nitty, gritty world where the rules of life are decidely Darwinian and true heroes are hard to find - most people exist in the grey areas.

Following the bloodbath that ended the prison riot, life is returning to far from normal for those who survived in the experimental unit of Oz. The Aryan Schillinger still butts heads with Beecher. The mob, led by Schibetta, continues to find its business cut into by the cold-hearted Adebisi. Warden Glynn and Tim Mcmanus struggle to do the right thing for their prisoners, facing adversity at every turn from Governor Devlin. New prisoners include the child killer Shirley Bellinger and a guilty priest who will be forced to pay a terrible penance. The world of Oz will shatter your expectations in a season where safety is not an option.

I've just recently discovered this show on DVD. When I saw the relationship that was developing between the Beecher and Keller characters I remembered somthing I heard in the documentary, "The Celluloid Closet". A person being interviewed was saying that in Hollywood there seems to be this unwritten law that any gay storyline or subplot must end in tragedy. I've sinced learned that when the show came to an end this year, their story came to just such an ending, I thought how typical. But I've always been a fan of Tom Fontana's work ever since St. Elswhere in highschool. And I still look forward to seeing his craftmanship in this series.
