Just the kind of movie you don't want to see on a first date, One Night at McCool's is a veritable squirm-fest, with each character taking full advantage of a multitude of opportunities to embarrass himself. That is, except for Jewell (Tyler), the sultry focal point of a love triangle (well, really, it's a love quadrilateral) that is unfavorably reminiscent of There's Something about Mary. But whereas Cameron Diaz's Mary was the epitome of virtue, Tyler's Jewel is a Marilynesque vixen who would be innocent if she weren't so darn guilty all the time. She manipulates the heartstrings of her town's unfortunate men (barkeep Dillon, detective Goodman, kinky lawyer Reiser) to feed her need for home furnishings and consumer electronics. The Rashomon-like multiperspective narrative is a neat gimmick that breathes some added life into an otherwise formulaic outing, but too many antics (and the hyper direction) smack of desperation. Thankfully, Tyler is sometimes funny and always nice to look at, and Douglas steals a few scenes as a hit man who spends his afternoons playing bingo.
