Synopsis

In this remake of the 1960 Rat Pack favorite, Clooney and Pitt set in motion a plan to rob three casinos at the same time.

Review

The 1960 version of Ocean's 11, though not a great movie by any means, stood for a generation as the epitome of cool. Alas, the old must make way for the new. How mightily the reins have been handed. In the hands of the ever-accomplished Soderbergh, this breezy remake is consistently entertaining from beginning to end, and, ultimately, is more satisfying than the original. Wisely not having Clooney and company "echo" the Frank, Dean, etc. roles, screenwriter Ted Griffin reinterprets the story for today, giving the film a modern sensibility while able to maintain the sleek, nostalgic cool of the first film. The ever-agreeable Clooney is Danny Ocean, just released from prison, who masterminds the robbery of three casinos in Las Vegas. Pitt is his #2 guy, and Roberts is Danny's ex, now involved with the owner (Garcia) of the three casinos Danny has targeted. Obviously, there's more to this caper than just money. And there's more to this movie than just its impressive line-up of stars (of which, Reiner and Gould nearly steal the show). Soderbergh demonstrates such a pleasing storytelling ability that he's liable to con you into thinking there's less here than there really is. Don't be fooled -- this is the genuine article; a splashy, smart heist film that may not set out to reinvent the genre, but succeeds on charm, wit, a little bit of suspense, and a great, big, wonderful cast.
