Review

Leave it to the Coen brothers to combine Preston Sturges' Sullivan's Travels and Homer's "The Odyssey" and produce one of the year's most entertaining and funniest films. A screwball comedy in the best style of Sturges, O Brother, Where Art Thou? (which gets its name from the film Sullivan's director wanted to make) transcribes Homer's mythic epic to the rural South during the Great Depression. Clooney is Ulysses McGill, one of three chain-gang convicts on the run from their Mississippi captors and in search of untold treasure. En route, they meet a gallery of eccentric characters and fanciful adventure, including the "Odyssey"'s sirens (in the form of three beauties bathing at a stream), the one-eyed cyclops (Goodman as a one-eyed, dastardly Bible salesman) and a blind, railroad-traveling prophet. Lighter in tone than some of their former works, this is nonetheless one of the Coens' best films. Once again they don't try to duplicate previous successes, and this is a wholly original excursion into madcap hijinks and social discourse. The casting is on-target down the line. Clooney looks like he stepped out of a 1930s film, and similarities to Clark Gable are probably intentional. Nelson is hilarious as a dim-witted farm boy, and Root gets a special mention as a partially blind radio station manager. Add to this intoxicating mix a superb bluegrass/folk soundtrack, and it's easy to reason the Coens have done it again -- they're bona fide.
