Noam Chomsky is one of the worlds leading intellectuals, the father of modern linguistics, an outspoken media and foreign policy critic, and tireless activist. This DVD features Chomsky contesting official versions of history and today's news in two powerful lectures and a 45-minute interview. While each piece stands alone, they also complement one another to provide both a far-ranging view of world politics and a glimpse into Chomsky's personal political beliefs that is both entertaining and informative.
The intellectual rock star of modern linguistics and political activism takes center stage on this DVD that was unsurprisingly put together by an anarchist organization. The disc is comprised of two lectures and an interview; thus dry, uninspired production values are to be expected. The first lecture, “Imperial Grand Strategy,” is addressed to the students of the University of Manchester in May 2004. It clocks in at over 100 minutes, but thankfully multiple camera angles are used unlike the single camera segments that follow. The title of this lecture refers to a conspiracy of sorts that dates back to WWII. Chomsky explains how the country’s current dealings in Iraq are a logical extension of this secret strategy which calls for military interference in foreign countries for the benefit of the homeland. Fans of Chomsky will eat up every word while non-believers will surely roll their eyes. The highlight of the lengthy lecture is the Q&A session that, like the DVD’s closing 45 minute interview, allows Chomsky to demonstrate his vast intellect and quick wit. The second lecture, “The Assault On Freedom and Democracy”, provides a one hour static medium shot of Chomsky at a podium at Merrimack College in December 2003 as he discusses the Bush administration’s flaws and the inconsistencies that exist in the nation’s foreign policies. The information is interesting enough, but, once again, non-Chomsky fans will have a hard time digesting it all. The interview that wraps up the DVD deals with Chomsky’s opinions on anarchy, specifically the role it has played over the years and should continue to play in order to strengthen the country. Although this disc may someday serve as a valuable teaching aid, its low production values and the sheer depth of the information it contains will surely prevent the recruitment of any new followers.
