Filmed in the gimmicky fashion of real time, Nick of Time is a not-so-plausible but nevertheless intriguing political thriller which manages to offer a few thrills along the way. Depp plays a father whose daughter (Chase) is abducted upon arriving by train to Los Angeles. Walken and Moffia are the kidnappers, assassins who have been hired to kill the incumbent governor of California (Mason) who's running for reelection. As they hold his daughter captive, Depp is coerced to pull the trigger with a maniacal Walken following his every move. The film sets up an interesting dilemma for the loving father, which it only occasionally explores. In a departure for him, Depp captures the anxiety of a father caught in a nightmare, though he seems to be better served by his outsider roles.
