Synopsis

Review

Judging from its young but rabid cult following, it appears that a new generation has found its Sixteen Candles, albeit one that's filmed from Long Duk Dong's perspective. Napoleon Dynamite (Heder) is a most interesting über nerd -- one who is self-aware of his unpopular status in high school while being supremely confident in his fantasy drawings (awful), social skills (non-existent) and fashion sense (an unironic donning of an Annie Hall suit to the school dance). With only a minimum of plot, the brisk movie is more of a character study that sticks to the fringes of Idaho society. But instead of stereotypes, director/co-writer Hess presents surprises: witness the depth of best friend Pedro's varying ambitions, or the result of brother Kip's chatroom romance (extended in a post-credits sequence). Wes Anderson's influence continues to take hold on young filmmakers, evidenced here in the colorful and immaculately framed compositions and the cast's consistent quirkiness. Questions of tone abound: is the dance number at the end a parody or sincere? Are we to laugh at Napoleon or with him? Perhaps, like Long Duk Dong, he's an intended object of ridicule whom we wind up loving anyway. Whatever the case, this unique motley crew is ultimately indelible, and full of unexpected (even affecting) delights.
