The first and possibly the finest of Flaherty's social documentaries, this simply constructed but trailblazing film was named as one of the 25 outstanding films worthy of historical preservation by the U.S. Congress in 1990. Set in the frozen vastness of the Hudson Bay region of Canada, the story follows Inuit Nanook's heartrending daily struggle for survival as he and his family battle nature for only the barest essentials of life. An absorbing classic that has been restored to its original condition and graced with a new musical score by Timothy Brock and members of the Olympia Chamber Orchestra. A sad note to this film is that Nanook died of hunger shortly after the film was released.
