This is the story of John Lennon who in 1964 was persuaded by manager Brian Epstein to meet Freddie, the father who abandoned him 17 years earlier and the press was there. As can be expected the meeting was short and quite bitter. Epstein died three years later and Lennon then invited Freddie to his home and again things did not go well.
Later, the Beatles set up Apple records but the press was hostile and when Lennon commented that 'we're more popular than Jesus' did not help. Soon his marriage was over and he met Japanese performance artist, Yoko Ono. He has a son with her named Sean. In 1969 Lennon returned his knighthood to the queen in protest to England's support for the Vietnam War and at the same time his actions with Yoko Ono promoting peace alienated the press. Shortly afterwards he disbanded the Beatles to the other members' annoyance and, after arguments with Paul McCartney, goes to a therapist, who regresses him to the day Freddie left him. He learns that Freddie needs his help to write a biography, leading to one last showdown between father and son. Now how much of that did you know?
Lennon' has become a folk hero and a myth but we really never knew much about him. This film shows painful yet moving aspects of Lennon's life and it hurts to see his home life.
Christopher Eccleston is not as good as we anticipated. He plays Lennon as caustic and we see very little love, something that Lennon constantly preached. What we do see are things that make me want to forget him. Lennon fans will find much to criticize, however the scenes that we see him with his father and his Ex-Wife Cynthia more than make for these minuses.
