Synopsis

Quirky, laugh-out-loud funny and wildly unpredictable, this action-packed Finnish comedy is an absolute charmer.

Set in the frozen landscape of northern Finland, this raucous road trip begins when slacker Janne is sent out into the night by his beautiful and frustrated girlfriend Inari to purchase a cable box for their home. But the quest is not as simple as it sounds. Janne, accompanied by his two hapless and troublemaking friends, is propelled along a bizarre journey filled with such obstacles as naked, gun-toting Russians, some very hostile reindeer, a jacuzzi of bikini-clad beauties, barroom brawls, Inari's creepy ex-boyfriend and much more. Meanwhile, the police are in pursuit of the three friends at every turn. Unfolding at a breakneck pace, this winningly wacky comedy is an award-winning film festival favorite that was the biggest hit of the year in its home country (beating out the Harry Potter movies!).

Three slackers go on a wacky journey in desperate search of a digibox (a digital converter for analog TVs) to please one of their girlfriends in this Finnish comedy. While there are plenty of wacky hijinx involving wealthy Russians, beautiful middle-aged women, sinister lesbian water polo players and much more, there's a sadness that perhaps comes from the frozen tundra setting. Suicide and the inability to change are what our three heroes are questing against. Not all the jokes will translate to international audiences, but every shot of this film is composed with painterly precision and each of the main characters (at least one of whom starts off seemingly irredeemably unlikable) finds a way to transform over the course of the evening. What starts off as a somewhat tedious exercise in slacker comedy transforms into a profound message about finding the strength to live a normal life. And the literal deus ex machina that ends things is certain to bring a smile to viewers' faces.
