This insipid family comedy of anthropological fraud features Dreyfuss as the recently widowed and washed-up Professor James Krippendorf. To save his job and family, he claims to have discovered a lost tribe in New Guinea: the Shelmikedmu, whose culture includes among its many rituals circumcision, single fathers and neolithic dildoes. Smelling a hoax, Ruth Allen, Krippendorf's adversary (played by a sorely under-scripted Tomlin), demands film footage of the tribe. The resulting home movies are bizarre at best. Highlighted intermittently with jokes about farting monkeys, Krippendorf's Tribe is a hackneyed offering fraught with cheap product placement and even cheaper phallic humor.
