This original A-bomb allegory, and the first and best Godzilla film to date, features surprisingly effective special effects for its time, and a dark and somber tone absent from its many sequels. Godzilla, not one of the good guys in this original incarnation, rises from the sea belching radioactive breath. The inadvertent by-product of a nuclear accident, he wreaks total destruction at every turn, including the entire city of Tokyo. Edited for U.S. consumption, this version features spliced-in sequences with Burr as a reporter (named Steve Martin!) covering the events. The original Japanese release is unfortunately not yet available on video. (American remake in 1998)
