Synopsis

City of Angels depicts a love story between a female doctor (Meg Ryan) and a heavenly angel (Nicolas Cage). When Cage finds out that he can be seen by Ryan, he longs to give up his immortality to become human. Once he becomes human, he realizes the true meaning of love, and with that, the consequences of the fragile nature of life around him.

Review

In remaking Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire, director Silberling had a difficult choice to make: keep the flavor of the original or totally Americanize it for the romantic crowd. The end result of his City of Angels is a little of both, which is why the film is successful and unsatisfying at the same time. The morose Cage plays Seth, an angel who is one of many in Los Angeles who look after and hear the thoughts of the mortals around them. They dress in black, hang out at libraries, like tall heights and have a penchant for sunrises. When Seth crosses paths with Dr. Maggie Rice (Ryan), a determined, attractive surgeon, he begins to fall in love and soon questions his role as an angel. The film's first half manages to capture the pacing, style, and even the melancholy of Wings, albiet the L.A. sun gives the city a rosier look. The second, and more conventional, half is strictly a by–the–books Hollywood romance haunted by the predictability and essence of other melodramas.
