"Basic Instinct" was, quite simply, the sexiest, most visually exciting film of the 1990s (with "Boomerang" and "Getting Played" in a tie for being a very close second). Yes, Michael Douglas turned in a gritty and stylish performance as investigating police detective Nick "Shooter" Curran. Yes, Joe Eszterhas's screenplay was sizzling-hot, giving the actors plenty of opportunity to be likewise. But look at what else there was. There was Jeanne Tripplehorn's fiery and incisive work as Douglas's psychiatrist/hate-sex partner; that intensely sexy and intensely thrilling hate-sex scene between Douglas and Tripplehorn; and, finally--drum-roll here--Sharon Stone. Whether freely exhibiting her cooter during that now-legendary police-interrogation scene or getting it on with Douglas (which, yaay, happened much more than once) or just strutting around showing her considerable stuff, La Stone certainly, definitely proved that she was more than ready for stardom. She didn't just turn up the heat, she almost burned the whole damn place down. When he received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his career, Douglas facetiously thanked Stone for providing so many good times in bed (during the shooting of "Basic Instinct"). To take just one look at said flick is to make one wish that one were in his place during the aforementioned times--and to make one want to seriously thank her afterward.

Amazingly, some incidental lesbianism almost got this erotic thriller shut down by outraged militant gay activists screaming defamation in 1991... where were these people when THE BROKEN HEARTS CLUB was getting made? Much like that other Eszterhas masterpiece SHOWGIRLS, this is a skanky, lowbrow B-movie given sumptuous big-blockbuster treatment by Paul Verhoeven, the patron saint of deliciously overheated trash. Sharon Stone is blonde crotchless camp as a pouty bisexual zillionaire whose hobbies include athletic nonstop sex, reckless driving and writing sleazy crime novels. Michael Douglas, in the role Chris Meloni was born to play, is a partying homicide cop with a dark side. Sharon may also be a serial killer, but that doesn't stop Mike from banging the daylights out of the gal. He also finds time to sodomize his helpful but unstable shrink Jeanne Tripplehorn. There's buckets of nudity, filthy language, stellar gory mayhem and spectacular San Francisco real estate on display, and it's all much more entertaining than DON'T SAY A WORD or FROM HELL. The DVD comes with a cheap but nifty ice-pick pen!
