One of the holiday movies that have been getting a lot of buzz, “Any Day Now” is the story of a gay couple that fights the legal system to keep custody of the abandoned mentally handicapped teen who has been living with them. The film is set in the 1970’s and it begins with the gay couple taking the abandoned boy and they become his family; the family he has never had. When this unconventional living arrangement is discovered by the authorities, the two men are forced to fight the legal system to adopt the boy whom they have grown to love. One of the men in the couple is a handsome and successful lawyer who has fallen in love with a guy who appears to be a self-destructive loser. Soon afterwards, they struggle to attack the boy with Down’s syndrome.

Travis Fine directed this story of love between a flamboyant drag queen, Rudy, (Alan Cummings) and Paul (Garrett Dillahunt) his closeted district-attorney lover. The film looks at gay adoption rights at a time when they did not exist. The two men at a gay club in Los Angeles and before anyone realizes anything Rudy is taking care of Paul in an automobile. This might have a one night stand but Rudy finds Marco (Isaac Leyva), his drug addicted neighbor’s son, abandoned and he feels the need to care for the child. He decided to take him to someone involved with the law—who just happens to be Paul. We then watch the battle for permanent custody of Marco after his mother who left him is out of prison. Even though the mother is a convicted felon and a drug addict who abandoned her child, the judges have a difficult job believing that the child would be better off living with a gay couple. We must remember that the movie is set years ago yet we see the legal battle as a test of character. This is a story about people and not legal issues.

Alan Cummings delvers a wonderful performance of warmth and strength and he performs in dreg quite well. Dillahunt is also excellent and Leyva as Marco is very, very good–it is just too bad that his role was not more developed. I understand that the screenplay was originally written some forty years ago but has been reworked. We see two men with deep needs for each other and for Marco and even though their relationship began in the backseat of a car, they are brought together to care for the child.
