Bette Davis' Finest Hour

If Anne Baxter had opted on being nominated in the "best supporting actress" category, both she and Miss Bette Davis would have won Oscars that year (1950). But, ego was strong and Baxter insisted on being cited as "best actress" thus canceling out Davis, allowing Judy Holliday to win the coveted Academy Award for "Born Yesterday."

"All About Eve" is a wonderful film which boasts one of the wittiest screenplays in movie history. As Davis once said, "all any of us had to do was get up, come to work, say the lines and enjoy every minute of it."

The story concerns a young actress-wannabe, Eve Harrington (Baxter), who latches on to an established star of the theatre, Margo Channing (Davis). Not only does she plot and scheme to claw her way to the top, she tries to take Margo's man (Gary Merrill) a noted director AND Margo's best friend's (Celeste Holm) husband, playwrite (Hugh Beaumont).

Marilyn Monroe plays a sexpot "actress" who attaches herself to columnist Addison DeWitt (George Sanders), hoping to make it in the theatre.

The film is packed with great lines and speeches and the actors are all expert in presenting them. George Sanders won "best supporting actor" for the film and Holmes and Thelma Ritter were both nominated in support.

A must have.
