No substitute for the original

While this is good, I firmly recommend spending your money on the original which features danseur extraordinaire Adam Cooper in the role of the Swan/Stranger. His abilities are superior in every way to this performance which didn't impact me enough to even bother learning the Principal's name. My synapsis? Buy the original. This version simply doesn't have the same caliber of Danseur and the corps supporting him is inferior as well. There is only ONE Adam Cooper and this kid doesn't begin to approach his performance in terms of skill and execution.

Forget the “Swan Lake” you know and see something new, vital and exciting. Matthew Bourne captivates us with his interpretation of the classic ballet by giving us all male swans who are wonderful, wonderful dancers. Aside from the music, this “Swan Lake” looks nothing like the traditional—the music is the same and the dancers are very fine but the plot is changed. I won’t say how but I will say to you to see this beautiful piece of work. Bourne brings intelligence, emotion, beauty and sensuousness to the production which now has a homoerotic touch. However this is not what makes it so good. The dancing is spectacular as are the costumes and the music….well, what can we say about the magnificent score?

We watch a prince deal with the manipulations he has been forced to endure and when he meets the swan he is smitten. This is an absolutely wonderful “fairy tale”.
