Review

Adapted by writer David Mauriello from his stage play, Just Say Love is a stunning departure from the average stage-to-screen film. With simple sets on a dark sound-stage and just two actors, director Bill Humphreys and team have created a strikingly elegant, moving and satisfying film. As the film opens, geeky Guy (Matthew Jaeger) is sitting on a park bench reading Plato. Doug (Robert Mammana), a hot construction worker, approaches the bench and asks Guy if he can join him. Their conversation veers towards sex, and “straight” Doug reveals that he could use a blowjob, and that he didn’t care if it was from a guy. The two men go up to Guy’s nearby apartment to take care of business. This sexual, non-romantic relationship continues to the shock of both men. But when Doug’s girlfriend gives birth to their child, this once-simple relationship comes to an end. One never knows which way the human heart will turn. Pure and deceptively simple, the very knowing Just Say Love is truly a wonderful cinematic creation full of love.

  We're given an Enchanted Fairytale....with a happy.......

.......ending. And you know what? We deserve it!

Having seen years of gay film productions (particularly romances) on video tape, Laser and DVD, for me most have been crap (any disagreement?). BUT....this one can take a proud and high position in the Top-12 of gay dramas. Excellent writing/conversion to screen, great staging.......they're in here. Still and all, it's Matthew Jaeger (Guy / Guido) and Robert Mammana (Doug) who breathe life into this work and into Us as we watch. Captivated and drawn into their simple lives, we see them become Us---you and me. That's right, who out here wouldn't want a man of openness, raw needs, funniness......wouldn't "physically" want such a man as Doug? Would anyone of us turn down a Guy's perceptiveness, depth of feeling, and indefinable ability to draw us out of ourselves?

So, in the end this whole thing (this "Just Say Love") has fallen to and been carried on the shoulders of these two amazing actors---actors who didn't just learn lines....but who lived their parts. In tribute to them, I feel compelled to say I can think of no other past performers in gay filmdom who could have done better. Can you?

  I loved it

Honest. Even though the sexual actions were mind played there were very effective. It is a realistic revelation of two guys falling in love. It is believable and I fell in love with both guys. I imagine them as my next door neighbors.
Thanks for the memory. 4 stars

  Unrealistic, but cute

High marks all around for cast, acting, and production values. The story is well done, if a bit unrealistic. Not every straight looking for NSA head from a gay man is a tormented soul in search of his long lost high school buddy fantasy. Sometimes he just wants to get blown. When guys as hot as Robert Mammana approach me for sex I have no inner conflict. Rather than the soul searching of Matthew Jaeger's charcter, I immediately search for a dark secluded spot to seal the deal! And guys willing to service straight men need to know what they're getting themselves into. You might get an occasional experimental kiss or 10 seconds of awkward sucking, but don't expect romance. Just hot, mostly one-way sex.

Gay Love and Marriage

Gay Love and Marriage

Many times two people come together because of physical attraction but does this constitute a relationship? This film looks at that very issue. The camera goes into the minds and the actions of two men and shows us just what happens. Matthew Jaeger (Guy) and Robert Mammana (Doug) play two men who are total opposites.
The film is actually a filmed stage play by David J. Mauriello and when you first begin to watch it you see a level of sophistication and humor that we do not often find in GLBT films. Doug is a good looking, rugged and married contraction worker who sits down on a bench next to Guy, a gay man who is reading Plato. The two begin to converse and they eventually go home and have sex. At this point you think that you have found a really good and new gay film. However, we soon learn that Guy is a writer who dreams of having a lover and becoming a "housewife". Doug is the stereotypical good looking and hunky "straight" male who cheats on his wife with men. Doug eventually becomes a permanent "one night stand" for Guy. He was looking for sexual satisfaction from a gay guy and along came Guy. what began as a casual oral encounter becomes a regular thing for the two men.
The idea of the film is simple--a human being is an individual that becomes something else when a new companion enters his life. Guy constantly reminds himself not to give in to Doug but he cannot help himself and when we reach the end of the film, everything ends up jus too neatly and this is the one fault I find here.
Like Berman's "Scenes from a Marriage" which I gather was the inspiration for this, "Just Say Love" is a collection of scenes from a relationship. Sexual coupling becomes something much deeper than just sex and we have the gamut of emotions thrown at us from the screen. I must add that the actors and acting are excellent.
The film is minimalist both in screenplay and in sets and we concentrate on the two actors who speak to each other. I find this to be a stimulating film, one of the best I have seen, despite the ending and I hope that it is a sign of what we can expect from gay film in the future. "Just Say Love" makes "Another Gay Movie" look like a kindergarten exercise.
