Synopsis

Have you ever been in love with your best friend?

From the director of last year’s festival hit Hannah Free comes Jamie and Jessie Are Not Together, a romantic musical comedy that tells the story of two queer girls whose codependent, loyal friendship is fraught with erotic tension. Jamie is moving from Chicago to Brooklyn with hopes of becoming a Broadway actress. Her best friend Jessica is bummed because she thinks she’s in love with Jamie. As moving day gets closer, Jessica tries to make Jamie jealous by dating other women,but Jessica’s plan backfires in a way she could never imagine. Within this world of love and lust, Jamie and Jessie must figure out how to grow together, or how to grow apart. Combine Show Me Love with 500 Days of Summer, add several original songs and two cute college girls, and stir!

Falling in Love with Your Best Friend

Jamie (Jacqui Jackson) is getting ready to move to New York to fulfill her dream of becoming a Broadway actress. Jessica (Jessica London-Shields), her best friend, is upset because she is secretly in love with Jamie and she tries to make Jamie jealous by going out with other girls but the plan does not work to her advantage. Jamie and Jessie are codependent and their friendship is somewhat erotic and tense as the girls try to understand how to grow together or apart. Love and lust are in those areas of the human mind that are not easy to comprehend. Yet this is also a feel good film as we watch the two come to terms.

Their friends know how Jesse feels but Jamie seems to have no idea and she is just used to Jessie being her friend and being around and even though her friends tell Jessie to tell Jamie, she doesn’t and acts dishonestly by dating others. Jamie gets busy with a few last dates with her lover, Rhonda (Fawzia Mirza, who I met last year) and they have some hot sexy scenes.

Wendy Jo Carlton wrote and directed the film which is set in Chicago and the acting is excellent as are the musical numbers that are well integrated into the plot. It’s funny and original and the cinematography is well beyond what we usually get in small films.
