James Curtis has written the definitive account of the life of the infinitive and stylish director, James Whale (author of Gods and Monsters. In 1931, Whale took a lanky, middle-aged truck driver by the name of Boris Karloff and casted him as the tragic creature know as Frankenstein. Whale went on directing the most stylish and unusual movies of the 1930's like The Old Dark House, The Invisible Man, and The Bride of Frankenstein. But Whale's success was short-lived because he was openly gay. He found work increasing harder to get, quit the business just 10 years after the success of Frankenstein, and committed suicide just months before the film's release on television.
