It’s 1973, and Tommy Warshaw is living with his mom in a Greenwich Village apartment. His fragile mom hasn’t yet recovered from his dad’s death a year earlier, and she dulls the pain with too many pills. At 13 years old, Tommy is her emotional caretaker; a position he also fills as best friend to decades-older Pappass, the school janitor whom Tommy has already passed in intellectual capability and will soon pass in emotional maturity. Pappass feels his relationship with Tommy threatened by that emerging maturity, leading to one rash act which, exacerbated by some misunderstood advice, results in consequences far exceeding any conceivable expectation. Writer-director Duchovny has crafted a childhood reminiscence that is both fantastic and familiar, an intelligently sentimental fairy tale touched with gritty realism. The film is populated with affecting and effective performances: Leoni as the brittle, not-tough-enough mother/child; Williams as the man who never leaves boyhood; and Erykah Badu as the Lady in the tower, whose instruction begets both tragedy and escape. The stand-out is Anton Yelchin as the young Tommy, who portrays a character of troubled vulnerability and arresting resolve without a hint of saccharine mawkishness. House of D is a tale of a man coming to terms with his childhood, finding closure and resolution with the past.
