Sabu loves sex and he is determined to have sex with 2000 boys and men. He works in a porn shop (or boutique which the stores prefer to be called) in Winnipeg. We meet him as he nears the end of his tally but then it was easy to find men because of where he works. For his very last conquest, his #2000, he wants someone special and he is set on eccentric Happy. Meanwhile as Sabu has sex to fulfill his dream, his hometown is threatened by a flood to rival the one in the Bible.
The characters in this film are a real menagerie. Sabu’s foil is Spanky, a hairdresser with no mental stability who wants to be loved and he has taken it on himself to stop Happy from reaching his goal. Spanky refers to himself as the biggest bitch in the world.
The film is reminiscent of early John Waters’ films with the number of gross scenes (everything from eating intestines to rape with a dildo). This is a surreal look which can be understood as a take on gay male promiscuity. Set in an atmosphere of both reality and fantasy, all of the action takes place outdoors. Director Noam Gonick uses his movie so that we can see his crazy friends---drug and sex addicts, transsexuals and gay men and while most of the time he does this tastefully, some of the scenes are a bit too long and the viewer loses his way. Some of the film is quite dark but I think that is used to counter the total abandon that keeps the story moving forward. The hedonism of the gay and rave scene shows its subversiveness.
I suppose some many consider the film to be campy retro look at Winnipeg. The city looks deserted and is mainly populated by transgender prostitutes which seem to reinforce the fundamentalist idea that homosexuality leads to the end and destruction of the world. The script is a bit incoherent—a bit?... it is totally incoherent and the city is facing a tremendous (ala Noah) flood. Sabu (Jeremie Yuen), a disc jockey and porn store worker, throws a rave at a landfill, Garbage Hill. He keeps his eyes on Happy (Craig Aftanas) who is also a bit strange—he claims to hear the voices of aliens on the radio and they tell him to give in to Sabu and be his 2000th trick. Spanky (Clayton Godson) is determined that this will not happen.
The entire film takes place during 24 hours as the end of time gets closer and closer. It also denies classification—it is a midnight movie, a stoner epic, a science fiction look at deconstruction, a gay fantasy, a love story and it is really unlike anything we have seen before. Does that make it a good movie or a bad movie? That is for you to decide.
