Pedro Virgil’s highly designed photographs depict football stars with bodies trained to perfection. In Gods of Sport he esthetically "soiled" his models and placed them in magically dark surroundings; this time we see these superstars in naturally bright settings. His models are tight with tension, his photos are impeccably produced, composed, and styled – nothing is left to chance. Virgil has only one single aim: erotic tension. Even though his models never drop the last piece of cloth, one keeps believing with the next turn of the page to see it all.
I don’t consider myself to be the pickiest person, and I usually give people credit where it is due. Unfortunately Pedro Virgil’s last book, Gods of Sport, wasn’t exactly my favorite. He took some beautiful men and sullied their flawless bodies with fake greasy makeup for a dirty effect. I kept saying that if he had only left off the body makeup he would have hit a home run. Mr. Virgil must have heard my pleas because for Gods of Football he has scrapped the dirt and given us flawless athletes in all their pristine glory.
But…this book has two small negatives for me. There is no doubt that the men in this book are gorgeous. For some reason, they aren’t gorgeous enough for the photographer and he insists on using loads of body makeup -- on a couple of occasions it is distracting. And there is no full frontal! I don’t always need to see full frontal but when the models actively avoid it there is an unnatural feeling to the photos.
These complaints aside, this collection is a show stopping volume. Oversized and richly printed, it gives us a highly detailed look at the athletically trained bodies of real football players. Most of the men are stunning and the masculine overtones compliment well the cocky undercurrent of understanding their sex symbol status.
I would sell my first born for a chance with some of these guys. Maybe next time the photographer will truly just let the men shine and avoid all the makeup and overly staged poses. Maybe the third time will be the charm but until then we are more than content with this sophomore effort.
