Review

Extraordinary spectacle and involving dramatics come together to produce the kind of epic gladiator movie that we haven't seen since the days of Spartacus and Ben-Hur. If it's sweep and action and story you're looking for, it's all here. In a performance that should finally make him a bona fide star, Crowe is Maximus, a decorated Roman general loyal to the emperor (a splendid Harris). Knowing he is about to die, the benevolent ruler decrees Maximus his successor, which doesn't sit too well with the scheming prince Commodus (Phoenix). In retaliation, Commodus murders his father and orders Maximus and his family killed. Maximus escapes, only to be captured and enslaved, eventually proving himself in the arena to become the star attraction of the Roman Colosseum. That the film works so well falls squarely on the very broad shoulders of Crowe, who creates a sympathetic, idealistic hero who never wavers in his principles. That the film also features remarkable cinematography, great effects and knock-out action sequences only makes it all the more impressive. In support, Phoenix is outstanding as the sniveling Commodus, and the late Reed is cunningly funny in his valedictory performance. Winner of 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor.
