Sometimes, style can indeed triumph over substance. In this inconsistenly dull Americanization of Get Carter, though, the (lack of) substance is so prevalent that the gloss is a mere distraction, and the action scenes are so infrequent that by the time one is jolted awake, it's on to another bit of underwritten dialogue. This updating does more than move Carter (Stallone) to Seattle; it replaces the social cynicism of the original with the idea that revenge can buy happiness. And yes, the brutal fights (especially with well-cast Rourke) and car chases are refreshing when they finally occur. But it leaves an empty feeling afterwards, one that the filmmakers don't recognize. Otherwise good performances by Cumming, Cook and even Stallone are wasted on the weak script.
