Mindy Cohn stars as Violet, one of the last remaining Fag Hags in NYC. Almost 40 and tired of coming home alone every night, Violet decides a change is an order. After a date with one of her phone sex buddies goes very badly she begins taking dating advice from her beautiful but anorexic co-worker, Salome (Kim Allen).
When Violet isn't spending her nights eating peanut butter and hooking up on phone chat lines; she is entertaining her gay friends, most of whom seem to adore and ignore her.

There are some gays in this movie too, but very little time is spent on them and their characters are never fully developed. One is Violet's co-worker Riley (Sam Whitten) who struggles with his baby-crazy boyfriend Markus (Casper Andreas). She also has to deal with her slutty roommate Luke (Jesse Archer) as he tries to become monogamous with his friend Darian (Adrian Armas).

Violet begins to distance herself away from her friends and co-workers as she spends more time with Vern. Violet goes from the racy party-girl to frumpy house wife when she meets Vern a boring but nice guy who enjoys Violet's company but has an aversion to gay men. Things finally come to a head when her friends try and stage an intervention to snap her back to her former self. Violet must decide whether to remain a single party girl and loyal friend to her fags or move away with Vern and enjoy her last chance at love.

I must admit most of the characters were very shallow and not always likeable. Cohn really carried this film even with the predictable storyline and dialog. When Cohn is not on screen the movie seems to really drag. I won't give away the unplausible ending, but I really enjoyed Cohn's performance. I say give Violet a chance

I have never written a review before but felt this film deserved one. I really enjoyed this film. Mindy Cohn played Violet, that slightly overweigh, pushy, loud mouth friend we all have. Surrounded by her circle of gay friends, all of which are in various stages of relationships, she decides she is tired of going home alone and tried to broaden here circle of male friends, meaning straight. Without rehashing the entire plot, she gradually finds friends and loving herself is more imortant than than settling for a "typical" relationship. Of course there is a surprise twist and Violet gets the best of both worlds. I really rnjoyed the movie. Well acted, directed, and a must for everyones movie collection. I hope to see more from team Archer and Andreas in the near future.

You sort of know what you're gonna get when Casper Andreas and Jesse Archer pair up for a feature film - or at least you did before 'Violet Tendencies.' Despite being almost iconic in their own way, their prior efforts very much have a 'love it or hate it' appeal/distaste - one wonders how the pair escaped being cast on LOGO's "A-List New York" TV series.

I dare say that 'Violet Tendencies' is a tasteful upgrade from their first few films - as tasteful as a film can get when Archer's character adds the word "biss" to queer vocabulary (you'll figure it out). Whether it was the involvement of TV icon Mindy Cohn, an obvious budget upgrade, or just the fact that Andreas/Archer are evolving and maturing as filmmakers, 'Violet Tendencies' raises the bar on what we can (and probably should) expect from both.

Andreas' direction is sharp, thought-out, and adds value to Archer's refined queer-fabulous voice, one that allows his characters to still shite glitter all over the place but do it with believable panache vs. crass lowest-common denominators. Cohn's Violet is entirely spot-on and makes us wonder where she's been all this time! She is very much ready to headline more projects, if not take on further long-term TV work - she's still got it in spades.

Even better is that every actor in film takes their role and raises the bar, adding layer after layer to the story and giving us a reason to root for them all. More than a couple of actors here deserve to be seen again and again, particularly the hilarious Kim Allen, and a moment of silent appreciation must be paid to the body that is Samuel Whitten, who makes his clothes look they're painted on. Brava to Andreas/Archer and Co.

Violet (Mindy Cohn, best remembered as Natalie in the iconic 80's sitcom "The Facts of Life") is the best friend/"faghag" of many gay boys in her area, but sees this as less desirable as she nears her 40th birthday. Convinced that her gay friends are monopolizing her time, keeping her from finding a boyfriend, she begins to distance herself from them, and tries a series of dates, which turn out to be mostly losers and lunatics. When one man seems to be relatively normal, she tries to make herself into the small-town-values girl he wants to settle down with, while her friends are concerned that she is losing herself in that charade.

It's a cute and realistic premise for a comedy, and it is even more entertaining with side stories about gay couples considering adoption, Violet's roommate breaking up with his boyfriend over monogamy issues, and a go-go-boy with a secret. The film, by Casper Andreas and Jesse Archer, carries over some of the gay characters from their "Slutty Summer" and "A Four Letter Word" entries, is amusing and worth a look. But Cohn absolutely steals every scene she is in, from going to a singles bar wearing a cat suit, to arriving at her job (in the fashion industry) wearing a dress her boyfriend picked out, which would look better on a farm wife churning butter. Screener did not have extras, but DVD will contain deleted scenes, audio commentary by the filmmakers, and cast interviews. Three stars out of four.
