Synopsis

Southern comedienne Vickie Shaw presents her take on life as a Texan lesbian and dealing with relationships. Shaw performs to a sold-out audience in Long Beach, California, and talks frank about her kids, menopause, and her partner "Sergeant Patch.”

Review

Out comedian (and "recovering" Southern Baptist) Vickie Shaw looks like anybody's mom next door. She has that Texas look going on: a penchant for big blond bouffant sprayed hair, sparkly jewels and of course she has that Southern accent. She riffs on raising kids as a lesbian, staring down menopause, and life in the Lone Star State. While she is not as well known as some of the lesbian comics who have been performing for 25 years such as Kate Clinton and Karen Williams and once you have got past the jokes in the first 5 minutes about lesbians owning homes and real estate value in California, which already seem dated in this economic climate, Shaw manages to hold her own, and get some laughs about her partner Sgt Patch, handcuffs and being femme!

Funny, in spots and somewhat topical, this show leaves much to be desired. She has her niche for sure, but the southern accent (actually, its more of a drawl and thats why it gets tiresome after a while) fits her but like anything good, only goes so far. Her understanding of her looks vs her reality plays well and Sgt Patch literally comes to life in her monologue but the balk of it falls flat. Try it tho, might work for you.
