This Portuguese psychodrama tells two stories that ultimately merge into one. Rui (the muscular Nuno Gil) has just lost his sweet boyfriend Pedro in a car accident and is depressed. Meanwhile Odete (the fashion model Ana Cristina de Oliveira from Miami Vice) is a forlorn clerk in a mega-store with a baby fixation. When she can’t convince her sexy boyfriend to have a child with her, she slowly begins to lose her mind and ultimately convinces herself that she is pregnant with the child of the deceased Pedro. As Odete’s behavior becomes more erratic, Rui tries to assuage his grief with heavy drinking and cruising parks and saunas for meaningless sexual encounters. He soon feels that only suicide can offer the quietus he seeks. Eventually, Odete begins dressing like the dead Pedro and this leads to a surprising and shocking climax. Boasting excellent, colorful cinematography, an imaginative score and the enticingly casual sexuality common to European movies, you may find Two Drifters a disturbing film, but you won't forget it.
