Transgender Rights written in 2006 is a very important book today--we see more and more transgender people speaking up and demanding more than they have. This is a collection of essays and articles that deal with the transgender issue and they are written by activists, lawyers. advocates and academics. The collection can serve as a road map for the transgender person and it also gives a great deal of historical information, legal hints and writings on politics. The three editors themselves are national figures in the transgender movement and they have collected some powerful writing here.

During the last 35 years the transgender movement has made itself visible and it has obtained several victories. Several states allow no discrimination as is true of many cities and over two hundred companies and hate crimes laws have been passed or amended to include gender identity in several states. However, there is still a long way to go and transgender people still suffer from violence and prejudice against them.

The book looks at the achievements of the transgender community (for lack of a better word) and it evaluates the victories and challenges that it faces. The articles here look at employment policies, health issues, economics, organizing and family law. This alone makes the book a valuable resource and I am sure that this volume will help to begin a movement for human rights.

The book is presented in three sections; Law (an examination of the current laws and applications), history (what has been gained) and politics (what action has been taken or is needed). The articles look at gender variance and marriage and basically the book tells us what needs to be done, what should be done and what has been done. This is not the kind of book you can relax with on an afternoon in front of the fireplace. It seems to me that the book is scholarly and is aimed at an educated readership and this book definitely enhances the existing knowledge. Many of the articles are written by transgender authors and those who are not show a complete understanding of the experiences of the trans community. While the book is academic in tone, it can be read by anyone and everyone. It is quite simply an encyclopedia of information and an excellent resource.
