Synopsis

Tin Man is a modern science fiction update of L. Frank Baum’s timeless The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. When a sorceress named Azkadellia scorches the once-beautiful land of O.Z. into a desolate wasteland, the only hope lies in an “outsider” named D.G., a young Midwestern woman, whose troubling dreams have summoned her to the doomed paradise. D.G. embarks on a journey to find the great mystic man to save the O.Z. and on her way she befriends a scarecrow named Glitch, a tin cop named Cain, and gentle manimal named Raw. It is considered un-American not to love “The Wizard of Oz” and no one can replace Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale. But “The Wizard of Oz” is dated and very, very sweet. “Tin Man” does not try to be better than “The Wizard” and is no way a remake. It stands proudly alongside its predecessor and holds its own. It does not attempt to update or imitate, it is an original and a good movie.” Tin Man” succeeds on its own and it is a unique and a completely rewritten fantasy adventure for today. And if Oz was Kansas in the original, here Oz is much farther over the rainbow.
Dorothy Gale (Zooey Deschanel) is D.G. now and she is all grown up and bored. She has a job as a waitress and is a part-time student. She finds herself in the Outer Zone—OZ and running away from the evil sorceress, Azkadellia (Kathleen Robertson) and her bats and storm troopers. As she runs, she meets some strange characters---the brainless Glitches (Alan Cumming), Raw (Raoul Trujillo), a very cowardly and psychic lion man hybrid and Wyatt McCain (Neal McDonough), a cowboy cop who is called “tin man” because he wears a tin badge. They are all searching for the same things that the originals looked for. They all long to belong.
I have to say that “Tin Man” is not just a modernization of the original; rather it is a total reimagining. “Tin Man” is a wonderful viewing experience and so relevant as it deals with acceptance. The acting is excellent, the cinematography is beautiful and the concept could not be any better. Deschanel as D.G. has a way with her so that we connect with her character.
