Review

Adapted from the 1991 off-Broadway play comes this endearing family comedy-drama about the unusual relationship between a father and son. Set in a working-class area of Sydney, the story centers around the widowed but fun-loving Harry (Thompson) and his football playing son Jeff (Crowe). What makes their story so different is that he not only knows that his son is gay, he helps and encourages him to find Mr. Right. The reason for this attitude is that his own mother, upon widowhood, embarked on a 40-year love affair with a woman.

With wit and charm, the two men's wacky home life is explored. Jeff falls hard for a handsome gardener and Dad finds temporary happiness with a widow. Funny and tender, this marvelous film breaks stereotypes, barriers and taboos.

If I could, I would give this film six(6) stars!! This film from Down Under with two major actors, should be required showing in all PTA Meetings all over America at least twice a year!! The subject of this film is self explanatory and handled with such artistic aplumb that the two major characters played by Thompson & Crowe just add extra spice to the mix!! What a absolutely, magnificant work of art!! A Classic to be sure and a absolute must for your Collection! A FEAST FOR THE HEART, MIND, AND SOUL!!!

Long before Russell Crowe became a mega-star/diva he made this excellent film about a gay son and his dad, who just wanted him to meet the right man. Sweet-natured, this film belongs not only in every gay man's collection, but they need to share this with family -- it's a PFLAG wet dream.

There aren't many movies that focus on fathers and sons who get along (I can't think if any others, actually)--so, the fact that the son in this movie (played by a young and adorable Russell Crowe) is gay makes the premise even more original. And Crowe's budding relationship with a possible love interest is also handled very well. I especially like the fact that the two men are very sexual, yet also have things such as love and romance on their minds. (most gays in movies are either all about sex, or are nice and funny--but seem asexual) The father also is a well-developed character who embarks on a relationship of his own. I'm not wild, though, about the talking to the camera bits--especially in a couple of instances when one character phyiscally can't speak at all. That might work on stage (the film was adapted from a play) but it doesn't quite here. Still, if two of the scenes at the end--while not sad in tearjerker way--don't bring a tear to your eye, then your heart is made of stone!

Russel Crowe at his Best!

The Sum of Us is one of my all-time favorite movies. I am especially fond of this movie as it came out before he was a famous as he is today.

Crowe exudes extreme masculine magnetism and an emotional vulnerability that capture the viewer's mind and heart. It's a must-have for Crowe fans out there.

Very well acted and honestly portrayed. Because of this movie Russell has always been one of my favorite actors right from the start.
