To simplify this gentle father/son tale into a story of of a martian child demeans this gorgeous book by the writer of the famed "Trouble with Tribbles" Star Trek episode. David Gerrold is an openly gay Hugo and Nebula award-winning science fiction writer. He turns his pen (computer) to the task of writing his own tale in The Martion Child. David made the difficult decision to adopt a child, certainly a challenge for a gay man. After a brief search, he decides to adopt a hyperactive 9-year-old boy who has lived in nine group and foster homes in his brief life. David, the good researcher, spends months reading up on hyperactive children and feels prepared as a torrent of energy called Dennis sweeps into his home. of course, nothing could prepare someone for such an event.

David gently takes us through the next two years as they bond - truly becoming parent/child taking them past abandonment fears, mis-medication and abuse. David Gerrold has truly created a splendid piece of autobiographical fiction - highly recommended.
