Synopsis

A son (Mulroney) brings his finacée (Parker) home to meet the family over the Christmas holidays, unleashing a series of comic misunderstandings, family feuding and newfound romances. From gay writer/director Thomas Bezucha (Big Eden) there is a gay deaf son in the family who brings his African-American lover home for Christmas.

Review

An all-star cast is essential when serving a holiday film with a bunch of lunacy and family dysfunction. The good news here is the casting gods came down from above and hand-picked a great group of actors to work together. The bad news is the characters they portray are people you would most likely never want to meet. Everett (Mulroney) is bringing home his uptight, paranoid, soon-to-be fiancée Meredith (Parker), whose neurosis is supposed to be comedic but is often times annoying. The bulk of the laughs come from mother and daughter Sybil (Keaton) and Amy (McAdams) who are entertaining with their unwelcoming notions and making it pretty obvious how they feel about the family’s newcomer. Luke Wilson also adds plenty of cheer throughout a sometimes depressing and melodramatic film that often tricks the audience into thinking they’re watching a comedy.

Some of the plot points are off the wall and questionable, including romances that just aren’t believable, which only adds to the regret that the memorable moments aren’t part of a bigger, more structured and genre-specific picture.
