The Fabulous Beekman Boys documents the adventure of a lifetime, as Brent and Josh - gay partners - try to make their entrepreneurial venture a success without sacrificing their personal relationship.
The farm is home to a menagerie that helps produce everything from egg white soap to cheese, but with Josh still living in the city to earn a paycheck and Brent living full-time at the farm dealing with the day to day tasks, the couple has created a recipe for conflict.
Brent (physician and ex-Martha Stuart exec) and Josh (author and former drag superstar) buy a farm in upstate NY, move up from Manhattan, raise goats, make cheese, have gorgeous parties and then we get to peek at their insane life behind-the-scenes with this wonderfully wacky reality show. Check out Josh Kilmer-Purcell's hysterical The Bucolic Plague: How Two Manhattanites Became Gentlemen Farmers about the whole experience.

I just finished watching season one of “The Fabulous Beekman Boys” and I lived it. Josh Kilmer-Purcell and his partner Brent Ridge (now an advertising executive and once a drag queen) bought and now live on Beekman Farm. Brent has kept his job in New York City so that bills will be paid until their organic farm begins to cover its own bills. The men are only together on the weekends and this has put a strain on their relationship. The guys never had raises animals or crops before and it is not easy for them. A neighbor and local goat farmer, Farmer John helps them.
This new series looks at how they two men adjust to urban life after having lived in Manhattan. Kilmer-Purcell lives at the farm full-time and as a doctor/health and wellness expert tries to find the way to grow healthy food. The financial pressures have caused the guys relationship to change and they become something like the odd couple.
The series advocates organic foods, buying from local farmers, and acceptance of the gay community. Let’s face, I do not know any gay organic farmers but I think the show wants to show that we can do anything. I love the way Kilmer-Purcell and Ridge appear to be so opposite yet are determined to make everything work. They bought the farm a little over two years ago. They adopted Farmer John’s goats and they now have over 120 animals and they got Farmer John to boot. Everything the guys have learned about farming, they have learned from their names and/or Google. The farm is over 200 years old and was built by William Beekman for about $10,000. In fact former members of the Beekman family are buried on the farm in a crypt. And there is the ghost of Mary Beekman who regards the guys as her “invisible friends”.
The guys have a llama named Polka Spot is being trained to be a goat herder and she herself is on Twitter. Although profits have not yet been felt, I have a feeling that it won’t be long before they are. Since many of us cannot get to Beekman Farm, the least we can do is support by watching the series and buying the DVDS. In that way, they guys will know that we care.
