Third Man Out (2005): You are hereby invited to figure out "whodunit." The series of Donald Strachey books written by Richard Stevenson are now classics of the gay mystery genre. This is the first in an anticipated series of adaptations. All set in the Albany region, the books feature a gay male couple, Donald (Chad Allen) the private investigator and his lover Ronnie, a legislative aide. Strachey and his lover are in the midst of restoring their elegant Albany row house when Donald gets offered a much-needed, but distasteful job. This story opens as Donald has been hired to investigate attacks on an activist who specializes in "outing" prominent politicians - an activity our hero finds quite nasty. The activist John Rutka is played by Jack Wetherall, familiar to "Queer as Folk" fans as Vic Grassi, Michael's uncle. Strachey abandons his new duty when he feels that Rutka is staging the threats against him. When Rutka turns up dead, Strachey is faced with an extensive list of enemies - all with enough motive to kill. Featuring a juicy cameo by porn star Matthew Rush, a handsome gay male couple and a murder most foul, this is one film you won't want to miss.

Shock to the System (2006): Following up the terrific Third Man Out, director Ron Oliver is back with the second installment in the Donald Strachey mystery series. Strachey is asked to investigate the suspicious death of Paul Haig by three different people: Haig's homophobic mother, his ex-lover, and the psychiatrist hired to "cure" him of his homosexuality. Our favorite gay detective is forced to go undercover inside an ex-gay therapy group when his newest client, the poster boy for this organization, winds up dead. Joining the already stellar cast is Morgan Fairchild.

On the Other Hand, Death (2008): Margot Kidder is dead-on perfect as a feisty older lesbian in this installment. When the residents of a neighborhood are offered huge sums of money to sell their homes to a developer, the only ones to refuse are an elderly lesbian couple. Soon after, the couple’s home is hit with anti-gay graffiti and bricks through the windows, and the women call in local gay private detective Donald Strachey. Contrary to what everyone believes, Don suspects that the attack is motivated by big-business rather than homophobia. And, as usual, Don is right with his hunch; if he wasn't this wouldn't be a successful mystery series, would it? Timothy’s first boyfriend shows up to help, and jealousy flares between the couple. As the investigation progresses, Tim and Don fall in love all over again, their bond strengthened by their admiration for the elderly lesbian couple.
