Synopsis

Dale is a male escort based in Greenwich, London. Sexy, confident, full of attitude and imagination, he is the king of his domain. Some loathe him because they secretly want to be him; others secretly hire him. On the surface Dale seems to lead a very together existence, but one major component is missing: love.

He is secretly in love with his best friend Raj, a handsome compassionate doctor who announces that he is getting married. Dale, shocked and despaired, turns to his friend Sean for answers, not knowing that Sean has strong feeling for him. Sean is a rebellious drag artist. Underneath the glitz and fabulous makeup, Sean is on a journey for self-discovery and acceptance. They are all connected by their friendship and their feelings varying from love to lust, but at what cost?

Review

Christopher Kelham (who looks remarkably like a younger Rupert Everett) stars in The Cost of Love as Dale, a confident hustler who is frequently in high demand. Though he has always been proud of his profession and lifestyle, Dale is getting older. After he learns that Raj (Valmike Rampersad), his best friend and secret crush is marrying a somewhat boring, ordinary woman, Dale starts feeling pressure to settle down. Once his good friend and co-worker Ricardo (Israel Cassol) is found murdered, him, a lifestyle change becomes an even larger necessity.

Meanwhile, Sean (Michael Joyce), Dale’s drag queen best friend, is looking to settle down as well. He has his eye on an older bar patron named Richard. Hoping to be swept off his feet and treated to a new life of luxury like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, Sean goes on a date with the debonair Richard, but learns that his new partner is keeping a few big secrets that may derail his best laid plans.

With raunchy, sometimes violent sex scenes, a very sudden ending, and a generally bleak point of view, The Cost of Love will not please all audience members. The film is capably made, but it’s often hard to relate or feel compassion for a protagonist as narcissistic as Dale. The film sets him up for some major self-assessment that never really comes. Michael Joyce as Sean, however, steals the whole show with his dynamic drag persona. Sadly, Joyce died not long after The Cost of Love was filmed. His dedication during the end credits moved us more than anything else in the film.

OMFG That was PAINFUL

That had to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The dialog could have been written by a 13 year old with an addiction to bad soap operas.. The acting was pedestrian at best. I would only recommend this film to my ex, because I think he deserves to suffer.

Discovering Self

All of us have gone through periods when we were on journeys of self-discovery—some of us succeed and others do not. Here is a story of gay men who want to know who they are. Dale, a male prostitute living in London is full of himself good looking and confident. He rules the male trade and some hate him (because they really want to be with him) and others admire him from a distant and others pay for his services. Dale comes across as conceited and pompous but beneath that tough exterior is a man who does not have love,
Dale is secretly in love with his friend Raj who tells him that he is getting married and this shocks Dale who turns to Sean, a drag queen and friend and the news of his marriage devastates him. Sean is filled with rebellion but beneath the heavy make-up and glitzy clothes is also looking to find out who he is. Our three main characters not only desire to be accepted, they (Raj) sometimes go out of their way to prove to the world that there is no real difference between men and women.
Dale (Christopher Kelham) prowls the streets looking for sex but I can imagine that deep inside he is also looking for love. His confidence is the result of not being in love and we, in the audience, see that.
Sean (Michael Joyce) personifies drag queen glitz—shiny yet bawdy. He is totally lost in a world of reality—he needs love and he soon finds it but then he is not sure what to do with it. Raj (Valmike Rampersand) is a doctor and the object of Dale’s lust.
Carl Medland’s direction brings the three stories together and it takes good direction to do that. We get a story that is very real and it is excellent. He created a film that talks with us and not at us and that has something for us a chance to think. I did have a bit of trouble understanding the British English but I was watching a screener and I am confident that on the finished DVD, it will be fixed.
