Todd Verow films spark something in my brain. I did have the pleasure of exchanging a couple of lovely emails when he kindly made available some DVD's of his that I could not get hold of. This film was loaded with familiar images. The performance artist doing Yoko Ono's Scissors piece, Devine's lets shoot the audience from Female Trouble, a brief appearance by sexy Marcel Schlutt from Locked Up/Gefanger, a Dietrich drag and images closer to whom of the boys wrapped in plastic tape that reminded me of an old boyfriend who went to an art exhibition wrapped in nothing more than some see through plastic sealer. Solange had all the style of a friend who had talent but is more interested in the self promotion image. Todd's work always has truth. It often appears to be that of a select group of bohemians but it really is average life. The one concern is that although there were an ample number of sex scenes, he seems to have adopted the Hollywood style of sex from the shoulder up. The film seemed castrated. i.e. not a penis in sight unlike his earlier films where I must admit it was Todd's own member that was more often on show.

The soundtrack is really really good (Sally Shapiro!) and there's bands on it that I've heard of. The cinematography and production values are crazy good for a super low budget indie film. The actress who plays Solange is the best mix, warm, beautiful and then scary and cold. The lead guy is great and the French boy singer is sexxxy. AND there was a story I could follow. The end was scary, sad and then happy and well... watch it!

Todd Verow is one of the pioneers in queer film and his new film is about a guy who is incredibly handsome, John (Tim Swain) and a black actress, Solange (Mahogany Reynolds), who has a following for her really terrible Italian horror films.
John’s life changed drastically when his childhood friend, Kevin (Josh Ubaldi) died. John had accuses Kevin of never explaining the beginning or ending of a story and instead just jumped into the drama. John did not realize that he was about to take a jump into drama. Solange is a B-movie actress and she comes to Kevin’s funeral and within minutes of meeting John offers him a job as production and personal assistant for “The Unknown Tourist Guide”. This is to be a show/magazine that Solange is planning to do in Europe. John quits his regular job in Boston and moves to Paris. Solange is invited to all of the A-list parties yet she is a total bore. John soon realizes that Solange lives a complex life and it is dangerous.
This is not the best of Verow but interesting nevertheless. Character development is slow and all in all the acting is mediocre but it is Todd Verow and that means something.
