Synopsis

Theo, a hip, young Berlin callboy, lives his life alone. In the hotel room, he takes a shower and his money. Business is good, so he can pick and choose clients.

Marie lives next door with her boyfriend, the writer Paul. She works at a record store to support them both, but it is not enough. Frustrated, Paul decided to leave. Marie is shattered, retreating behind her door - into the darkness of her apartment.

Soon, Theo knocks on the door and light slowly seeps back into Marie's life. Slowly, both find that love is possible in the most improbable of places. But, just when it seems that all the barriers have come down, Paul comes back and the door that opened just a crack closes once again.

Review

The loneliness of a pretty "rent boy" and his developing relationship with a flighty salesgirl is the central story in this absorbing drama. Theo is a Berlin hustler -- a handsome young man with an amazingly sweet and trusting, if a bit secretive, nature. Despite living the "good life," Theo begins feeling a little old and his sadness is relieved a bit when he strikes up an uneasy friendship with his next door neighbor, Marie. This tentative friendship -- between two quite different people brought together by a common need for intimacy and understanding -- makes for a surprisingly touching and sensitive tale.
