Review

All About Eve -- The Bette Davis classic still remains the definitive Hollywood movie about theatre life. Bette, in what is possibly the quintessential Davis role, stars as Margo Channing, a first lady of the theatre whose professional and personal life is changed forever when a seemingly starstruck young woman (Anne Baxter) enters her life. A brilliantly scathing, enormously witty look behind the masks of the players who strut and fret their hour upon the stage. Celeste Holm, George Sanders and Thelma Ritter are all superb in supporting roles in this, the ultimate bitchfest. The character of Eve was originally written as a lesbian, but only shreds of this remain in the film. There remains only two subtle scenes - involving Eve's roommate and the film's finale - which hint at her sexual orientation.

Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte -- Motivated by the success of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Hush... is yet another Grand Guignol thriller which was so common in the 1960s. Originally titled Whatever Happened to Aunt Charlotte?, Davis, again in Baby Jane territory, stars as a very wealthy victimized hermit, haunted by the memories of a dead lover. Moorehead, who received an Oscar nomination for her unrecognizable slovenly housekeeper, is hauntingly funny, as is most of this wildly over the top thriller that never fails to please.

Phone Call from a Stranger -- A survivor of a plane crash (Merrill) visits the families of various victims, and receives understanding from a kindly, invalid widow, played by Davis. Involving melodrama.
