Review

A challenging and rewarding psychosexual drama.
A bold and compelling psychosexual cross-dressing drama that offers a different, and, in many ways, decidedly controversial twist in its treatment of same-sex relationships. Apartment Zero meets Blue Velvet through the eyes of Harold Pinter in this low-budget, black-and-white tale that is infused with moments of both intense drama and black comedy. Essentially a two-character story grittily enacted out in a dank factory loft, the story focuses on two young men: 26-year-old Trevor (Peter Pryor), an angry, sexually confused busboy tormented with an intense fear of women, and Lanh (director DiNovis), a heroin addict who needs a place to crash after stealing a drug stash from his former roommate. But what begins as a simple house-sharing arrangement quickly escalates into a frenzied battle of manipulation, co-dependency and gender-bending submission as the emboldened Trevor lures Lanh, with the promise of drugs, into becoming Dorothy, Trevor’s demented concept of his ideal girlfriend. A troubling but bracing departure from the often times “positive” approach prevalent in gay-themed films today.

Intense Twisted Hilarious

I had heard this film referred to as “the most frightening film of the decade.” Although it is almost chilling that someone could actually think like the troubled Trevor, and the ending was almost agonizing in both its suspense and killer act we don't want to see, the thing that stands out most is how freakin' funny the film really is! After seeing it a second time, what were scenes of disturbing deviance suddenly seemed hysterical in the bizarreness of the situation and the ridiculous yet utterly subtle perspectives of each character. The film is brilliant, the performances stellar, but maybe marginalized by it's bizarre and yes disturbing take on sexuality and abusive relationships. I’ve never heard of Pete Pryor, but his performance was truly extraordinary. And I never get tired of looking at the beautiful Elizabeth Banks (credited as Elizabeth Casey) as a teen.

This film was so necessary and yet so... out there! The acting was great, the take on domestic abuse and same sex realtionships was banner. It's one of the oddest approaches to satisfying entertainment I have ever seen! Pete Pryor and Kevin DiNovis? But they sure were great!

Dark, edgy, and delicious

The first feature film from Kevin Dinovis, who wrote, directed, edited and starred in this gritty portrayal of edgy co-dependence. If you like your films dark, eerie, haunting, disturbingly sexual, with an ending that lets you draw your own conclusions... this one is definitely for you.

What an impressive movie. Although I had never heard of the cast and director I'm sure we'll see more from them. I wonder if the producer has another Surrender Dorothy in the works. My friends and I all agreed we had never seen a film anything like this one before. The film is quite a brew. It's not surprising that Roger Ebert also discovered this independant gem.

Psychological thriller/Comedy
