Jasper Lane is the perfect, sunny, American neighborhood, or so it would seem. Melinda Gold is a young mother whose desire for position in the neighborhood is at odds with her upbringing by her ultra conservative mother. The same mother who makes life hell for Melinda’s son, Patrick; Cassie Bloom is the grand dame of Jasper Lane, living on a cul du sac and doing her best to annoy Melinda. But she has a secret of her own regarding her missing husband and son that only a few, including the transsexual Vera, know about; Rick has just moved into the neighborhood and has immediately fallen for the ex-Army man, James. Will he find the courage to go after what he wants?; Terrence, Rick’s good friend, has found out he has a son from a one-night stand years before where he dallied with heterosexuality; and the perfect couple Steve and Sandy have run into a rough patch which forces Steve to find employment in the porn industry.
All these stories interlock and play out in a brightly comic way with gay porn parties, sexually confused animals, and dead bodies all being thrown in the mix. It may not be perfect, but it sure is fun!
Grab a margarita and pull up a lawn chair for the show of the day as dramatics abound on Jasper Lane, a less than quiet street in a sunny suburb whose residents are a cast of extreme caricatures. Caricatures, who surely remind us of people we all know, grew up with or have become.
Take for instance the overly-righteous bible-thumping wife with the perfect lawn and control issues, or the gym-obsessed gay couple with sculpted bodies and perpetually full house. While the characters are not too vividly drawn it is the tangled and twisted story lines of intrigue and romance, homophobia and espionage, and of course the tricky little business of gay porn that take center stage. Not to mention the queer dog that continually pops up uninvited.
Written with a crisp humorous dialogue that will at times make you laugh out loud, you can easily get lost in the antics of these wacky neighbors.
My only wish for this book (aside from more thorough editing) is that it was longer and that the characters were more developed in order to carry off the deliciously unimaginable tom fooleries they engage in. I suppose we will just have to wait for the next installment in what I hope becomes an ongoing series to get better acquainted.
Author Eric Arvin has indeed succeeded in creating a dreamy little lane where the furthest you need to go for your entertainment, and hunky eye candy, is the front lawn.

I first came across Eric Arvin’s writing by chance. I had been looking for something new to read and while surfing the net one day, I came across Eric’s “The Rest is Illusion” and I wrote to him and asked him to send me a review copy which he did and I loved the book. I sent Eric my review and a friendship began between the two of us (a good review always brings friends -J). We have become email buddies and I have been trying to talk Eric into coming to the Arkansas Literary Festival (and I may have been convinced). Recently he wrote that he had a new novella out and he said he was sending me a copy and sure enough, he did. Like “The Rest is Illusion, his book kept me sitting and ready all afternoon and I was so sorry to close the pages. I felt as if I had made friends with the characters in his book and I was going to have to say goodbye. Eric is one of those new young talents who I think will go very far. We just have to help him be discovered.
“Subsurdity”, the new book is a pleasure to read. Made of stories that weave n and out of each other and are filled with great humor, we learn about Jasper Lane—a “perfect” neighborhood. We soon find out that “perfect” is not the exact way to define this little piece of “paradise”. Melinda Gold, a young mother in Jasper Lane does not agree with her mother about how she is being raised or about her desire to attain a position in the area. Melinda’s very conservative mother, Cassie Bloom, is also at odds with Melinda’s son, Patrick. Cassie thinks she rules Jasper Lane but she has secrets of her own. Her husband has been missing and Cassie knows something about his strange disappearance. Cassie’s son is also missing and many of the residents know little about him. One resident, Vera, a transsexual, however knows something. Then there is Rick, a new resident to Jasper Lane and he has fallen in love with an ex-Army man, James only James does not know. Rick also has a good friend named Terence, a homosexual, who suddenly discovers that he has progeny from a one night stand when he messed around in the heterosexual milieu. And there is yet another couple—Steve and Sandy who are having troubles and Steve is forced t find employment in the porn industry. Got it all?
This is the prefect summer read—it’s light, it’s fun and it will keep you reading. In fact, I have not had ths much fun in a long time. I am not going to give anything away or tell you anymore except that this book should be at the top of your must-read list. If you miss it, you will miss a lot and will have no one to blame but yourself. (And as an added bonus, you get a picture of the good looking hunk who wrote the book on the back cover—something that dreams are made of).
Subsurdly Funny

At first glance, Jasper Lane is your typical suburban neighborhood. There's the usual assortment of vastly different people thrown together by the sheer coincidence of living in close proximity to one another. But much like a certain other fictional lane that has become known for the outrageous antics of its housewives, Jasper Lane hides its share of secrets.
Eric Arvin has created a delightful and hilarious world on Jasper Lane. SubSurdity more than lives up to its name, showing the often absurd underbelly of suburban life. Everyone is so busy trying to keep up appearances they almost forget to see each other. Arvin's breezy writing style is fun and often laugh-out-loud funny. This is especially impressive when contrasted with his equally wonderful, but much darker first novel, The Rest is Illusion.
Summer may be almost over, but this book is the ultimate beach read. In fact, I even started it on the beach. I ended up reading some passages out loud to my friends -- or, at least, trying to between laughing. I loved the characters and felt a sense of loss as the book came to a satisfying close. Luckily, I understand Arvin is already at work on a sequel and hopes to turn the books into a series.
One things is for sure, I'd much rather live on Jasper Lane than that certain other Lane. In fact, when can I move in?
