Synopsis

Review

Tapping into the Fred and Ginger in all of us, first–time director Luhrmann has crafted a glorious take on the elegant (but at times wacky) world of ballroom dancing. Paul Mercurio is a bad–boy hoofer whose innovative technique flies in the face of the traditionalists, making him an outcast in a dance community where "ballroom" has been elevated to a religion. With a nod to Dirty Dancing, he takes up with an awkward dance student (Tara Morice) and the two set out to win the big dance competition. As by–the–books as it sounds, a laugh–out–loud, zany and enjoyable musical is born. The film's can't–keep–still soundtrack and rousing choreography may make ballroom dancing the new national craze.
