Mae West made her film “She Done Him Wrong” in 1932 when she was 39 years old. It is based upon her Broadway play “Diamond Lil” that she, herself, had written. Not only was it nominated for an Academy Award but it introduced the world to Cary Grant. What the movie proves is that all those classic lines that West uttered were written by her.
“She Done Him Wrong” is an excellent film, full of classic Mae’s bawdy dialog and double entendres. The plot is simple and it is obvious that she is the star. She uses her great talent and she owns every frame of film in which she appears. It is not only her humor that is great but her timing. Her charm is accentuated by the “dime novel” nature of what she says. She was a great comic that had the ability to make us laugh at sex (something almost unheard if when she lived). Grant is perfect opposite her and when are together, it is magic.
Almost all of West’s signature lines are here and when she says, “Why don’t you come up and see me sometime”,
you want to run to the door and head for her house.
Set in New York’s bowery around 1900, Mae West is Diamond Lil, the mistress of a big time gangster but she cheats on him because she cannot resist tall, dark and handsome Grant. When the “heat” begins, so does West. The props and sets reflect the “gay-nineties” perfectly. Here is West before the rating code and dripping in diamonds and mouthing those wonderful one liners. All the men want her and most of them have already had her—if we believe what she says.
This is a classic film that should not be missed.
